We finally went back to England, four years after our vow that we'd be right back. It's been hard to make time to travel, until now: I haven't worked for months, but we're not yet broke.

Virgin has a package deal with extremely low airfare when bundled with a week's stay in London. And I've never been there before. I've wanted to visit London, maybe even live there, since I was a teenager. The weather at home is as cold and wet as English weather, anyway.
Finally, here we go.

We figured we'd spend the week in London then take the train to Newcastle for a few days. However, the privatisation of the rail system has led to mass layoffs, switching problems, derailments, and skyrocketing ticket prices. Oh, and strikes.
What once was romantic is now merely chaotic.
Airfare from London to Newcastle is $50 r/t. Train fare is $375. We'll fly, from Stansted - scene of a desperate Afghani hijacking two years ago. We probably should have taken our chances with the train, but we'll get to that later.
